Hustle Time ( HIGHPOINT)
Oh my, I am finally here, easing toward the greater journey ahead. The adrenal rush is certainly very real. I have told myself so many stories throughout this journey, not all good. There was a time when I felt like giving up. I had the support of Bongi, who was instrumental in introducing me to Catalyst Coaching and Mel. I also had the support of the cohort, watching each one determined to be present for our graduation on the 17th. A special mention to Donny, who ran his own race and if anything it was inspiring and propelled me forward . I can do this and I will do this. My why is important and big enough for me to keep moving forward. As I reflect on this session, I reminded about a quote that my daughter always reminds me of, its from the Batman Lego movie. The quote is “life has no seatbelts”. I love that quote for so many reasons. The one is that, in reality we truly are not protected from what life throws at us. We learn to navigate through each experience with the support of family and friends. The support at times is not always what we need or want, that is where Coaches play such a critical role.
To Hustle is truly an art form :
Hustling is an art form
Never Lean Back. I remember listening to a motivational talk to spoke to failing forward. How amazing to fail forward and still move in the direction of our choice.
A hustler always pursues progress and constantly works to get things done. Actions speak louder than words.
Self-promotion is a necessary part of being a hustler. Believe in yourself and your capabilities. You have not come this far to only just come this far.
Don’t Fear The Critics. I value critics, it allows me to strengthen my skills and reflect on what is real for me
Make Connections. Networking and the support from others is key for us to move forward. When we enlist a Coach in our corner, we not only have a cheerleader, but also someone that we can trust to hold the mirror up to us with compassion and care, no judgement.
Take What You Need. Don’t be afraid to ask for what you need, at times fear gets the better of us and we do not ask for what we need. Trying and failing is better than not trying at all.
Show What You’ve Got. We are have a song in our hearts, a gift that the world needs to know and experience. One of the things that my dad always taught us is that even with our talents and gifts always stay humble. I love the work that I needed to to do to balance my gifts and being humble about it at the same time.
Carry Yourself with Confidence. Self doubt can be a killer, I love that as a Coach we get to work with Coachee’s that want to build on their self esteem and confidence.
The session on Hustle time was insights on new perspectives through acceptance and awareness.
5 Cycles of Starts/ Hurdles
Self- sabotage– negative thoughts and feelings where we convince ourselves of every reason why something wont work. It includes our own lack of self worth, fear and feelings of insecurity.
Tomorrow/ Procrastination – This is something that I personally struggle with and are constantly working on not putting things off for tomorrow when then can be done today. It is the gap between our intention and action, or waiting for the perfect time.
Unworthiness – Self perceived belief that we are not good enough or not deserving. I mentioned earlier being humble, this can be counteractive when we on the extreme end of humble and feel that success is not for us.
Uncertainly – This ties into the quote “life has no seatbelts” and it I have to extend that I would add and its okay. When we hold on to control we limit ourselves from exploring our own creativity to do and be more. We do not take risks because of the fear of the unknown. We always want to know what will happen next and if we do not, we will not be open to try different things.
Scapegoat – When things do not go our way, instead of looking inwards at ourselves and our contribution, we look to blame others.
These are all areas that Coaching supports through conversations, curiosity questions, reflection’s and insights.
When we Coach, we look at the ways to remove the hurdles or false start :
Self-help – we believe in their human ability and that create opportunities for them to believe that it is possible or doable.
Today – The Present, in Coaching we are helping our Coachee present themselves in “Today” with daily realistic steps to reach their goal.
Yes I can – Coaching supports re-framing from the negative to the positive. When we support and believe they can, it helps the Coachee envision new thinking for themselves and a different way to see their vison/ goal through a positive lens.
Clarity – Every Coachee is looking for clarity, when we have clarity, we think better, we are able to make decisions and live freely. When we work with a Coachee it is important that the Coachee becomes clearer about their situation, if this does not happen, the Coach can easily loose credibility with the Coachee. ” People want to understand and be understood”.
Responsibility – Take accountability. The Coach’s role is to encourage and create a safe space for the Coachee to say and feel whatever is on they mind. When the Coachee can do this, they can also take responsibility towards their change and growth. As a Coach we cannot change anyone, the Coachee must want the change for themselves.
I am so excited as I continue to write and reflect on the learning from this session.
Mel covered each thinking piece with ease as each of us took grasp onto our own independent learning.
P A C
Perspective – If the Coachee has gained a different perspective, the Coachee has gained success. This is the aha moment for the Coachee, and its at that moment the Coach realizes that every moment before this has be worthwhile in everyway.
Affirmation – The Coach might be the only one giving the Coachee affirmation, and being their cheerleader. It makes the Coachee feel seen, heard and loved. It allows the Coachee to themselves move from Negative, to Neutral into Positive.
Celebration – Again the Coach might be the only on that celebrating the Coachee, celebrating each big or little effort, progress of the Coachee’s journey. When we are celebrated, it supports us appreciating ourselves and builds on our self confidence.
What an absolute Hustle it has been. The journey is only just beginning. To everyone in the Cohort, in the spirit of Ubuntu, I am because you are.
