Module 11

Facilitates Growth

ICF Definition : Partners with the client to transform learning and insight into action. Promotes client autonomy in the coaching process.

The learning for me during this webinar amplifies the words partnering and facilitates, being a coach is really about being the guide on the side and not the sage on the stage. It is about supporting the journey that the coachee has decided to embark on. The Coach’s role is to encourage awareness and new insights from the coachee’s thinking and move the coachee from a place of uncertainly or stuckness to one of possibility and clarity. Growth happens for the coachee when they are able to own their own plans and thinking into a future that they want to create for themselves. How amazing to be part of this process as a Coach, to see the growth happen before us, as we explore with the coachee the depth of their own thinking, thoughts and feelings.

The sub learning points : When I think about each of these sub points it is really about holding the mirror up for the coachee, in a gently caring way, free from judgement. When the process is free from judgement it creates a space for the coachee’s growth to happen organically, uninhibited from doubt and fear.

(1)Works with the client(coachee) to integrate new awareness, insight or learning to Integrate new awareness insight into their worldview and behaviors.

(2) Partners with the client(coachee) to design goals, actions and accountability measures that integrate and expand new learning.

(3)Acknowledges and supports client (coachee) autonomy in the design of goals, actions and methods of accountability. Empowerment – acknowledges client(coachee) autonomy in the design of accountability. As a coach this is in the knowing that client is not broke, and has all the resources that he/she needs to make the best decision from their own thinking with the support of a Coach. We as Coaches believe in the clients ability to their own best thinking with our support while they take ownership of their decisions and actions.

(4) Supports the client(coachee) in identifying potential results or learning from identified action steps. This is whilst we as Coaches offer a space for the coachee to reflect on their own actions and thinking that bring about new possibilities with varied outcomes for themselves.

(5) Invites the client(coachee)to consider how to move forward, including resources, support and potential barriers This speaks to the coaches ability to deepen their curiosity with the coachee, allowing him/her to reflect on the past, current and how the coachee envisions the possibilities of the future, agreeing on goals and timelines that support the coachee’s consideration of how he/she wants to move forward.

(6) Partners with the client(coachee) to summarize learning and insight within or between sessions. This is an opportunity to set timelines and milestone check in points with the coachee. It is important to keep the sessions well timed, to give the coachee sufficient time for action to happen. My thinking here is to allow the coachee to decide what works for him/her with the Coach then holding the coachee accountable for what he/she had decided.

(7) Celebrates the client’s(coachee) progress and successes. Everyone loves to feel celebrated and acknowledged for growth, the coachee is no different and every step towards his/her goal is worth celebrating. This will keep the coachee’s momentum going even when the task at hand is challenging or difficult.

(8)Partners with the client (coachee) to close the session. often the time might be up but the coachee is still feeling incomplete. My thoughts and reflection on this is to acknowledge how the coachee is feeling towards the end of the session and invite them to share final thoughts that will allow them to feel complete at the end of the session.
