I loved the presencing exercise, it was great to take those moments to center myself, forget the day and bring myself into the room with the the rest of the coaches.

The learning was refreshing, to truly maintain presence is a skill indeed and it certainly takes ongoing practice. Everything we do as Coaches is connected. In the way we show up, our body language, our facial expression, the calm or chaos that we bring is noticeable to our client. It will allow our coachee to open up freely or close off. It is in the awareness of our own triggers and inhibitors that allow us to be truly present for another. The keeping the presence in every session requires us as coaches to also look withing ourselves, what are we needing in that moment to be present, and to be consistently present.

What are the things that support us as coaches to maintain our presence in a one on one or group session? Our ability to remain focused, observant, empathetic and still be responsive at the same time. This means looking at the space that we have invited the coachee into, is it free from distraction, rush and urgency? we have a role in making sure that the coachee also understands how place plays an important part of the coaching session. Are we hearing what the coachee is saying for us to be curious and have an appropriate response/question to their emotions at the time? Often It is in keeping that awareness around the fact that the story is the coachee’s and not mine, regardless of how relatable it might be to me.

The demonstrating of curiosity, allows us to take the conversation deeper. The less we know the better, it allows for the curiosity to flow more naturally, as familiarity can often get in the way curiosity. The more context we can gain from the coachee, the more meaning our curiously can become, free from judgment.

As coaches we are also human and have our own emotions. At a coaching session however it is important for us to remain authentic and at the same time manage our emotions to stay present and engaged for the coachee. The way in which we can achieve this, is again through our own awareness of self, what are our triggers or emotional points that could cause us to loose presence. It is important to breath into the situation and find a positive emotion in that moment that will allow us to stay grounded and present. Even something as simple as taking a drink of water in that moment that bring us back into the room with our coachee. Each coach finds his/her way of being able to manage their emotions, it often is not a one size fits all approach.

The confidence that we have internally can support us greatly with coachee’s that demonstrate their own strong emotions. We need to be aware of the systems that might have influenced the behavior and that the reality of work and everyday life often merges as one. As I continue to immerse myself into today session, I understand the importantance of us as Coaches to also be flexible and agile in our own thinking. We need to also understand our own ability and capacity whilst dealing with a caochee’s emotions and when it might be necessary to refer the coachee to a Psychologist etc..

ACT – PROCESS – LEARN

As a coach it is also important that we are comfortable with working from a place/space of not knowing. This means that we do need to tap into our intuitions and allow the flow with the coachee to happen organically. It also means that as coaches we need to be ok with not knowing and letting go or giving up of certain traits that we might have picked up over the years. It means letting go of being a fixer, a helper, healer, solution finder. As a coach we need to understand that the one that holds the thinking, also holds the answers and solutions to their own life journey. As a coach all we need to often do is BE present.

The silence is always deafening to most, and often when there is silence we feel like we need to find something to fill the space. In a coaching conversation silence or a pause is welcomed. It is healthy and good that the caochee has those moments to reflect on their own words. The brain needs a minute and half to process the emotions of what has just been said. When coaches allow for the silent moments, its allows for the coachee to reflect on their own emotions and improves the quality of the session.

My own self reflective process around presence is an ongoing journey. Some days I get it amazingly right and other days, not so much. I am constantly in practice of presencing and my awareness when I am not.

Maintains Presence as a Coach This was a beautiful session with Wendy.
