The power of reflecting about those in our lives that showed up as sport coaches was a great way to open up the learning for the session. As I and others in the room remembered the qualities these individuals possessed that allowed us to excel in sport, it was clear that many of those qualities were what was needed to be a great coach. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Many of these fall into “The Pyramid of Success” diagram, by the late John Wooden. The pyramid for me was a beautiful list of the building blocks we need in life, as leaders, as parents and in many of the roles we have and more so as the coaches that we all aspire to BE. The two words that stood out of me were Integrity and Sincerity. The essence of a great coach is to always be in integrity with his or herself before they can be in integrity with others. Sincerity for me is around showing up as myself always, knowing that when I am authentic in my being, the coachee will feel the same way. This will allow for more openess from the coachee. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
A great coach who is also an amazing listener allows me to grow while also being able to challenge my thinking with really great questions. Questions support deeper thinking in abundance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
When we looked at the 7 aspects of what makes a great coach. Each one held so much value and it is clear to see how they all speak to each other. The analogy that comes to me as I reflect on these qualities, is one of planting a seed. In order for the seed to grow, it needs soil which can represent the belief that the coach has for the coachee to grow through this process. It also needs air, which talks to the understanding that the coach has towards the journey as the coach supports the coachee’s self-esteem through the watering process, encouraging the coachee while also understanding the climate that the coachee might be in and is able to challenge the coachee’s reality through questions. The plant also needs the sun, for me this speaks to external forces that might be needed for the coachee to be inspired into action and expand options, maybe a bigger pot is needed for the growth journey. The parting thought is that we just need to BE, and allow the organic growth to happen just through our presence as a coach for a coachee\/seed to truly grow. <\/p>\n\n\n\n What does it mean to be a great Coach ? It was so great to be in the room with everyone for the first time since I joined the CCC accreditation journey. As I write and reflect, I am constantly reminded about how valuable the reflective process is, for both the Coach and Coachee.
